Patna: Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, on Monday, May 4, announced that each migrant worker who is returning home by train, will be reimbursed Rs 500.

The Bihar government, the CM said, had already decided to allow students to travel back home for free, and are now extending the same benefits to the migrant workers.

The development comes after the Bihar government received flak from the Opposition, as well as the top leaders of their ally the BJP, for being heartless in its approach to the situation.

It can be recalled that hours before making this announcement, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav offered to pay the fare of stranded Bihari migrants in 50 trains to bring them back.

Ever since the nationwide lockdown was announced, scores of migrant labourers have been struggling to get back home; some thronging bus depots and railway stations and others making an exodus back home on foot.
