In a refreshing step under the Ahmedabad Heat Action Plan, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services (AMTS), alongside Mahila Housing Trust (MHT), unveiled an innovative ‘Cool Bus Stop’ at Lal Darwaja on platforms 7 and 8.

Strategically selected due to its exposure to harsh sunlight and daily footfall of nearly 3,000 commuters, this bus stop features khus curtains crafted from dried vetiver grass. These natural screens act as barriers against hot air while promoting natural airflow, offering immediate relief to those waiting.

Adding to its cooling prowess is a high-pressure mist system that disperses ultra-fine water droplets. This mechanism absorbs ambient heat, lowering the surrounding temperature by 6-7°C, making the bus stop a comfortable oasis amidst Ahmedabad’s sweltering climate.

Beyond comfort, the solution is sustainable. The mist system consumes significantly less power than conventional air conditioning, ensuring reduced energy usage and a smaller carbon footprint. Smart features include automated timers and water-saving mechanisms, guaranteeing efficient and eco-conscious operation.

Additionally, a built-in dust suppression feature improves air quality by minimising pollutants—benefiting both commuters and the environment.

The inauguration event saw dignitaries like Mayor Pratibhaben Jain, Standing Committee Chairperson Hemant Parmar, AMTS Chairman Dharamshibhai Desai, and MHT’s Dipika Vadgama join forces to promote climate-resilient infrastructure.

Ahmedabad’s ‘Cool Bus Stop’ demonstrates how simple, smart innovations can beat the heat sustainably.
