A disturbing incident of ragging has surfaced at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jodhpur, where a first-year BSc Nursing student was subjected to verbal abuse by senior students.
After the distressed junior lodged a formal grievance with AIIMS Director Dr. Govind Das Puri, the institution’s anti-ragging panel convened to investigate. Both the victim and the three accused students were heard. As per the Supreme Court’s directive, any form of intimidation or mistreatment towards a junior qualifies as ragging.
Following deliberations, a senior student was suspended from academic activities for three months, while another received a one-month suspension. The third student, who was present but not directly involved, was issued a stern caution. These penalties mean that the suspended students are barred from attending classes for the duration of their punishment.
This incident took place on February 15th, during preparations for a freshers’ celebration scheduled for March 8th. While students assembled in the activity hall, three seniors allegedly humiliated a first-year student, causing emotional distress. The victim subsequently filed a written complaint, prompting an immediate inquiry.
All three accused confessed during a preliminary probe. A subcommittee assessed the matter before it was presented to the anti-ragging committee, which finalized the penalties. Notably, AIIMS Jodhpur had previously suspended MBBS students last year for similar misconduct.
