Pilots Iqrom Rifadly Fahmi Zainal and Maitryee Shrikrishna Shitole, commanding Air India Express Flight IX 613 from Tiruchirapalli to Sharjah, are being lauded for their exemplary handling of a hydraulic failure mid-flight. The aircraft, carrying approximately 141 passengers, encountered a malfunction in its landing gear. The pilots, demonstrating quick thinking and professionalism, decided to circle in the air for two hours to burn excess fuel, a necessary precaution since the narrow-body Boeing 737 doesn’t have the option to dump fuel. This action reduced the aircraft’s weight, ensuring a safer landing back at Tiruchirapalli airport.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Governor R N Ravi publicly praised the pilots and crew for averting a potentially dangerous situation. Governor Ravi highlighted their “courage and calm professionalism” during this tense moment, while Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu noted that emergency response teams were promptly activated after the issue was detected at 6:05 PM.

The airline’s spokesperson confirmed that no technical issues were reported before take-off, and the matter is currently under investigation. An alternative flight is being arranged for the passengers to continue their journey to Sharjah.

This incident showcases the importance of training and composure in ensuring passenger safety during emergencies.
