An Air India flight operating from Mumbai to Bengaluru returned to its origin shortly after take-off on Thursday after a technical issue was detected mid-air, officials said.

Precautionary alert issued by pilots

The incident involved flight AI 2812, operated by an Airbus A320 Neo aircraft. Shortly after departure, pilots issued a “PAN PAN” alert — an internationally recognised signal indicating an urgent but non-life-threatening situation — and decided to return to Mumbai as a safety precaution.

Officials stated that a sound was heard and sparks were reportedly noticed during take-off, following which the crew acted promptly in line with safety protocols.

Aircraft lands safely

The aircraft, which had departed around 2.15 am, returned and landed safely at Mumbai airport within minutes. A local standby was declared to ensure preparedness on the ground.

There were 47 passengers on board, all of whom were reported safe. The aircraft has since been grounded for detailed technical inspection.

Airline response and passenger support

In a statement, Air India confirmed that the flight returned as a precaution due to a suspected technical issue, emphasising that standard operating procedures were followed.

The airline assured that passenger safety remains its top priority. Immediate assistance was provided to travellers, and an alternative aircraft was arranged to complete the journey.

Alternate arrangements made

Officials said the replacement flight departed at around 4.45 am, ensuring minimal disruption to passengers despite the early-morning incident.

Safety protocols highlighted

The incident underlines the effectiveness of aviation safety protocols and the importance of precautionary measures. Timely action by the flight crew ensured that the situation was handled without any harm to passengers or crew.tly.
