Ahmedabad: A major aviation disaster struck Gujarat on Thursday afternoon as an Air India aircraft carrying 242 passengers crashed near Meghaninagar, close to Ahmedabad airport. The incident has triggered a full-scale emergency response, with rescue and fire teams deployed swiftly to the scene.
As per initial information from the State Police Control Room, the aircraft went down in the densely populated Meghaninagar locality. Though the crash site is in proximity to the airport, the exact cause remains undetermined.
Eyewitnesses reported a loud explosion followed by a massive fire. “The aircraft burst into flames upon impact. Firefighters were rushed immediately to control the blaze,” said fire officer Jayesh Khadia, who is overseeing firefighting efforts.
Ahmedabad police commissioner GS Malik confirmed the incident, stating, “A plane has crashed in the Meghaninagar region near the airport. At this point, it is unclear what type of aircraft it was or the nature of the technical failure, if any.”
At the time of reporting, there has been no confirmation regarding the number of casualties or the condition of the passengers and crew. The area has been sealed off to facilitate rescue and investigation operations. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel, police units, and medical teams are on the ground, coordinating efforts.
Further updates are awaited as officials continue to assess the wreckage and attempt to gather flight data. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Air India are expected to release official statements shortly.
