New Delhi: A fire broke out on board the vessel MT Marivex on Monday afternoon, prompting an immediate response from Indian authorities. Officials confirmed that all 24 Indian seafarers aboard the ship are safe.
The incident was reported at around 1:30 pm, according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW). Authorities said preliminary information indicates that none of the crew members were harmed in the fire.
Speaking at a press conference, Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director in the Shipping Division of MoPSW, said the government is closely monitoring the situation.
“There has been a recent report that today, around 1:30 pm, there has been a fire reported on a vessel, MT Marivex, in which there were 24 Indian seafarers. This is the preliminary information which we have received, based on which, as per available information, all Indian seafarers are presently safe,” Sharma said.
Multiple agencies coordinating response
The Indian government has activated coordination mechanisms involving several agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of the crew members.
According to Sharma, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is working alongside the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian diplomatic missions abroad, the Indian Navy, and the Ministry of Defence.
“We are coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs, our Indian missions abroad, the Indian Navy, Ministry of Defence to ensure their safety,” he added.
Cause of fire yet to be determined
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire or the extent of damage sustained by the vessel. Details regarding the ship’s location, cargo status, and firefighting operations were also not immediately available.
Officials are expected to provide further updates once a detailed assessment of the incident is completed.
