The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday stayed the arrest of cricketer Yash Dayal, who plays for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), in a case where a woman has accused him of sexually exploiting her for years under the pretext of marriage.
An FIR was filed on July 6 at Indirapuram Police Station, Ghaziabad, under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (sexual intercourse by deceitful means). The complainant alleged that she and Dayal met five years ago, and during that time he repeatedly promised to marry her, introduced her to his family, and maintained a physical relationship. She claimed this led her into depression and multiple suicide attempts, accusing Dayal of emotional manipulation and infidelity.
Last week, Dayal approached the High Court seeking quashing of the FIR and protection from arrest. During Tuesday’s hearing, Justices Siddhartha Varma and Anil Kumar observed orally, “One can’t be fooled for five years,” questioning the prolonged nature of the alleged deception.
Dayal has denied the accusations and filed a counter-complaint in Prayagraj, alleging the woman stole his iPhone and laptop and took money under false pretences. He said he has evidence supporting his claims.
The court has put a hold on his arrest while it considers the matter further.
