Union Home Minister Amit Shah continued his annual tradition of celebrating Makar Sankranti by flying kites in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Tuesday. Accompanied by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Shah was seen enjoying the festivities from the rooftop of a building at the Shantiniketan Society in Memnagar.
Makar Sankranti, celebrated on January 14 every year, is a widely cherished tradition across India, particularly for its kite-flying customs. Mr. Patel shared a post on X, showing a crowd gathered on nearby rooftops to catch a glimpse of the Union Minister.
“Amit Shah celebrated Makar Sankranti with the locals at Shantiniketan Society in Memnagar and extended his best wishes to everyone on this festival,” wrote Patel. He also expressed gratitude to the society members for their warm hospitality and highlighted the festive decorations, including colorful kites and rangoli.
Earlier, Mr. Shah took to social media to extend his greetings for the occasion. “Makar Sankranti is a festival of unwavering faith in Indian culture and tradition. Heartiest greetings to the countrymen on this holy festival of energy, enthusiasm, and progress,” he posted in Hindi.
The festival, observed in various forms across India, marks the sun’s transition to Capricorn and the end of the winter solstice, signaling the arrival of longer days. In Gujarat, it is celebrated as Uttarayan, while in Tamil Nadu it is known as Pongal and in Assam as Bihu.
