Raipur: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made a bold commitment, stating that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government will completely eradicate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) from India by March 2026. Shah’s announcement came during a press conference on Saturday, following a crucial security meeting on anti-Maoist operations held in Chhattisgarh.

“The time has come for the final assault on Left Wing Extremism,” declared Shah. He underscored the urgency of accelerating efforts to combat the decades-long Maoist insurgency that has plagued various regions of the country. Shah emphasised the need to intensify operations, stating, “We now need to work with twice the speed and intensity that was there at the beginning of the operations against Naxalism, only then this problem can be completely eradicated from our country.”

A significant focus of the meeting was on cutting off the financial resources and arms supplies that sustain Maoist groups. Shah stressed that halting the flow of funds and weapons to these extremist factions is crucial to the success of the anti-Maoist campaign. The review meeting, held in Nava Raipur, saw the participation of senior officials from seven Maoist-affected states, reflecting the collaborative nature of the strategy against LWE.

The discussions at the meeting revolved around several key issues, including the strategy for tackling LWE, enhancing inter-state coordination, capacity building of security forces, swift investigation and prosecution of Maoist cases, and the comprehensive development of areas affected by Maoist activities. An official present at the meeting highlighted the importance of these discussions in shaping a robust approach to eradicating LWE.

To ensure the continuous progress of development projects in LWE-affected areas, Shah recommended that Chief Secretaries of Maoist-affected states should hold review meetings every fortnight. He warned that without consistent monitoring, the anti-Maoist operations would fail to achieve their desired outcomes.

Shah also addressed the need for a balanced approach towards the surrender policy for Maoists. While advocating for flexibility in the policy, he cautioned against its misuse, suggesting that a careful balance must be struck to ensure that the policy aids in the reduction of violence without being exploited by extremists.

Further, Shah called for the transfer of inter-state cases related to Naxalism to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to ensure more efficient and coordinated investigations. This move, he believes, will bolster the legal framework necessary to combat the complex and often cross-border nature of Maoist activities.

In his concluding remarks, Shah emphasised the ideological battle against leftist extremism. “We will have to fight against those who support the ideology of leftist extremism and convey our views to all sections of society with humility and firmness,” he asserted, signalling a comprehensive approach that includes both military and ideological strategies.

The high-level meeting was attended by key figures such as Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, and the Chief Secretaries and Director Generals of Police (DGPs) of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Directors of the Intelligence Bureau and NIA, and Director Generals of CRPF, BSF, SSB, and ITBP also took part in the discussions, reflecting the government’s commitment to a united and coordinated effort to eradicate LWE.

As the NDA government intensifies its operations against Maoist forces, the coming years will be crucial in determining the success of these efforts and the eventual eradication of Left Wing Extremism from the country.
