Anupriya Lakra becomes first tribal woman to fly commercial flight!

Bhubaneswar: India is witnessing increase in women making their presence felt in each and every profession, mainly in aviation sector. According to report in Times of India, the percentage of women airline pilots stands at 12.4 percent as per the recent statistics. The data received by ISA+21 pronounced that the percentage of women pilots is twice that of global average.

The country has also witnessed Wing Commander Avani Chaturvedi ASP becoming the first female fighter pilot of India in the year 2016.

Currently, a 27-year-old tribal woman named Anupriya Madhumita Lakra, who hails from Malkangiri district, which is prone to Maoist activities has become the first woman tribal pilot in commercial airlines.

Speaking to The Hindustan Times, her father Mariniyas Lakra, a police constable has said, “Though it was difficult for me to fund her pilot training, I took loans and got help from relatives. I always ensured that my daughter gets an education in the field she wanted to.”

Expressing the joy over her daughter’s feat, Anupriya’s mother Jimaj said, “We are happy that she has become what she always dreamt of. I want my daughter to be a source of inspiration for all girls. I urge all parents to support their daughters.”

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has taken on social media platforms to congratulate Anupriya saying, “I am happy with her achievement. She will be a role model for several girls.”

Anupriya will be joining Indigo Airlines as a co-pilot later this month.
