New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur has stirred a controversy with ‘Goli Maaro’ sloganeering during an election rally.
The video of Thakur, which has gone viral and is now being examined by the Election Commission shows Thakur raising a slogan.
The Delhi CEO Office has also sought a report from the North West district’s election officer in connection to the episode.
The minister, who was campaigning for the BJP candidate in Rithala in North West Delhi for the February 8 Delhi election, can be seen saying: “desh ke gaddaron ko…”, to which the crowd responds “…goli maaro sa***n ko”, which translates to “Shoot down the traitors who betray the country”.
However, Thakur is never seen chanting the controversial part of the slogan. He only initiates the sentence and allows the crowd to shout out the controversial part. He claps as the crowd plays along.
Thakur, as junior minister of finance, is part of the team involved in the Union Budget to be announced on Saturday amid a sharp slowdown and worrying growth.
