An Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) team inspected the historic Kalki Vishnu temple in Sambhal on Saturday, following a survey of another recently uncovered temple in the district.

The temple’s priest, Mahendra Prasad Sharma, expressed his approval of the visit, as reported by PTI. “The temple houses a ‘Krish Koop’ (ancient well), which, though dry, holds significant mention in the Skanda Purana alongside other Sambhal pilgrimage sites,” he said. This well is situated within the temple’s old boundaries.

Vandana Mishra, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sambhal, confirmed that the ASI team spent about 15 minutes examining the temple and its ancient well to determine its origins. “The well, believed to be centuries old, is yet to be accurately dated,” she remarked.

The ASI team’s visit coincides with their recent discovery of 19 ancient wells in Sambhal, alongside the Shri Kartik Mahadev temple (Bhasma Shankar temple). The latter was reopened on December 13 after being uncovered during an anti-encroachment operation. The team also surveyed five pilgrimage sites in the area during their investigation.

These efforts aim to uncover and preserve Sambhal’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
