Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Tuesday. According to the latest information, the water levels in major rivers have begun to recede due to a decrease in rainfall. The report says, the number of individuals affected by the deluge has dropped to approximately 170,000.
The flood currently impacts 170,377 people across nine districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Darrang, Bajali, Barpeta, Cachar, Goalpara, Kamrup, Karimganj, Nagaon, and Hojai. This marks a significant decrease from June 23, when over 200,000 residents were affected in these areas.
Tragically, the death toll from this year’s combined flood, landslide, and storm events has risen to 40. The most recent casualty occurred on Monday, June 24, 2024, when an individual drowned in floodwaters in Cachar district.
Karimganj district remains the most severely affected, with 96,440 people still surrounded by floodwaters. Cachar follows with over 52,400 affected individuals, while Darrang reports nearly 10,802 people impacted.
The Kushiara river in Karimganj continues to flow above the danger mark. However, other major rivers and their tributaries are showing a receding trend, attributed to the reduced rainfall over the past 48 hours.
Currently, 13,094 displaced residents are seeking refuge in 149 relief camps established across the affected districts. The flood’s impact extends to 641 villages, with 2,273.44 hectares of cropland damaged throughout the state.
The disaster has also taken a toll on infrastructure, with reports of damage to embankments, roads, bridges, and other vital structures in most of the affected districts.
This situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Assam during the annual monsoon season, highlighting the need for continued disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts in the region.
