Guwahati: A 30-year-old assistant engineer with the Assam Public Works Department (PwD), Jyotisha Das, was found dead by suicide at her rented residence on Tuesday afternoon in Bongaigaon. In a handwritten suicide note, she accused two senior officials of relentlessly pressuring her to clear fraudulent bills for incomplete construction work.

“I am taking this step due to extreme stress from my work. There is no one to guide me in the office. I am tired and have nowhere to go. My parents are worried for me,” the note read.

Following a formal complaint from her family, the police have arrested Dinesh Medhi Sharma, a newly promoted Superintendent Engineer, and Aminul Islam, Sub-Divisional Officer in Bongaigaon, on charges of abetment to suicide. Both were directly named by the victim in her note.

Sources indicate the pressure was linked to approval of payment for unfinished or falsified infrastructure work. The police are now conducting a deeper probe into the project in question, including a re-evaluation of cost and physical progress.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered a thorough investigation into the case, including corruption angles and departmental lapses.

“This tragic loss demands full accountability. Every official involved will face consequences,” a senior police officer stated.
