Pune: In a tragic incident, Shiv Shankar Mitra (52), the chief manager of the Bank of Baroda’s Baramati branch, was found dead by on Thursday night within the bank premises. Mitra hailed from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and had been serving at the branch for several years.
Upon receiving information, a team from the Baramati City Police Station, under the Pune Rural Police, reached the scene and launched an investigation. A suicide note recovered from the site revealed that excessive work pressure led Mitra to take the extreme step. The note, however, did not accuse any individual bank official of direct responsibility.
According to Inspector Vilas Nale, Mitra had submitted his resignation letter on July 11, 2025, citing deteriorating health and workplace stress. “We have filed an accidental death report as per procedure. His resignation letter and suicide note both highlight prolonged job pressure,” he said.
Police are probing whether Mitra experienced undue pressure beyond regular duties, especially since the bank had not relieved him citing a 90-day notice period.
In his note, Mitra acknowledged the hard work of fellow employees and urged the bank not to impose overwhelming workloads. He also left behind a heartfelt message to his wife and daughter, apologizing and requesting that his eyes be donated if possible.
This incident has brought renewed focus on employee mental health and the need for corporate responsibility in handling work-related stress.
