Violence breaks out in Bareilly
Bareilly: Tension gripped Bareilly on Friday after violence erupted during a protest march linked to the “I Love Mohammad” campaign. The protest, called by Ittehad-e-Millat Council chief Maulana Tauqeer Raza, was intended as a sit-in at Islamia Ground but turned violent when some participants pelted stones at security personnel.
Heavy security was deployed across the district in anticipation of trouble, with police, PAC and paramilitary forces conducting a flag march earlier in the day. Despite the precautionary measures, clashes broke out, forcing the police to resort to lathicharge to disperse the mob.
Police response and restrictions
District authorities stated that prohibitory orders were in place, preventing gatherings without permission under Section 163. Senior officials stressed that no attempt to disturb peace would be tolerated. Police officials alleged that a group of miscreants emerged during the march, raising slogans and instigating violence.
Following the incident, additional reinforcements were called in, and surveillance was intensified to prevent further escalation. No official count of injuries or arrests was shared by the administration at the time of reporting.
Roots of the controversy
The “I Love Mohammad” poster campaign first surfaced in Kanpur during the Barawafat procession earlier this month. From there, it spread to other districts of Uttar Pradesh, as well as to Uttarakhand and Karnataka. Religious leaders and groups backing the campaign say it is a show of devotion, while authorities remain cautious about its potential to trigger unrest.
Maulana Tauqeer Raza had earlier declared that the protest would go ahead “at any cost,” regardless of police permissions. His supporters accused the administration of trying to suppress religious sentiments, while officials maintained that law and order considerations were paramount.
Situation remains tense
By evening, police had managed to disperse the crowds, but the situation in Bareilly remained tense with shops closing early in sensitive areas. Senior officials appealed for calm and urged people not to pay heed to rumours.
Authorities also warned that strict action would be taken against those found guilty of inciting violence. Residents in Bareilly have been advised to remain indoors until normalcy is restored.
Conclusion
The Bareilly incident highlights the fragile communal situation in parts of Uttar Pradesh, where symbolic religious campaigns often become flashpoints. While the administration stresses law and order, community leaders are likely to continue pressing their demands, making the coming days crucial for maintaining peace.
