Kolkata: Close to 9,000 people who had passed a secondary examination under West Bengal Board Secondary Education (WBBSE) before 1973 from Tripura and are now residing in Assam have applied to the WBBSE seeking documents for submitting to the National Register of Citizens (NRC), an official said on Monday, October 29.
“Many people who had passed under the WBBSE before 1973 as residents of Tripura have applied for documents to submit before the NRC. They were probably rehabilitated or settled in Assam from Tripura. They may have lost their documents,” said board’s President Kalyanmoy Ganguly.
“About 9,000 applications have so far been filed and close to 6,000 documents were despatched,” an official said.
Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) was established in 1973 and started functioning from the 1st January, 1976. Before the TBSE came into being, students from Tripura sat for their secondary examination under the WBBSE.
Assam’s draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) Ahas triggered a nationwide political row after over 40 lakh of the 3.29 crore applicants were excluded from it, sparking concerns about their future.
