The Bihar Police have registered a case against six individuals in connection with the gangrape and murder of a Dalit teenager in Muzaffarpur district. The girl’s mutilated body was discovered near a pond on Tuesday morning, sparking outrage and political controversy in the state. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the Opposition, with leaders from the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Bahujan Samaj Party demanding swift action.
According to the complaint filed by the victim’s mother, the accused, Sanjay Rai, along with his associates, forcibly abducted the girl from her home on Sunday night. The girl’s parents, daily wage laborers, were unable to prevent the kidnapping as the assailants were armed. The family alleges that Rai, who hails from an influential Yadav family, had been harassing them because of their Dalit identity. The complaint further reveals that Rai had been pressuring the family to marry the victim, a minor, to him, a proposal they had rejected.
Rai and five unidentified individuals have been charged with gangrape, murder, and sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The Muzaffarpur police are continuing their investigation, with forensic teams collecting evidence from the crime scene. The postmortem report is awaited to confirm the rape allegations.
The incident has fueled criticism against Bihar’s law and order situation, with opposition leaders pointing to a rise in serious crimes in the state.
