Bihar has registered its highest-ever growth across milk, egg and meat production, outperforming national averages and marking a major boost for the state’s livestock sector. The latest figures from the Union Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying show Bihar far ahead of India’s overall growth trends.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Animal and Fisheries Resources Department, N Vijayalakshmi, said Bihar’s performance over the past year reflects “exceptional expansion” across all three categories.
India’s national growth rates stood at 3.58% for milk, 4.44% for eggs, and 2.46% for meat. In comparison, Bihar recorded:
- 4.24% growth in milk,
- 9.99% in eggs, and
- 4.03% in meat.
Per capita availability rises
The availability of animal-derived products in Bihar has also improved.
- Milk: increased from 277g/day to 285g/day
- Eggs: from 27 to 29 per person annually
- Meat: from 3.19kg/year to 3.27kg/year
Vijayalakshmi noted that Bihar now stands sixth nationally in annual milk production growth.
Fisheries sector sees strong expansion
The state has also made significant strides in fish production. Bihar, which ranked ninth in India in 2013–14, has climbed to fourth place in 2023–24. Various state schemes, she said, have helped Bihar become “self-reliant” in fisheries.
