Coimbatore police arrested a 30-year-old man, Karnan, on Monday for stealing an electric coupe car worth Rs 23 lakh from a car showroom’s stockyard on Trichy Road near Singanallur on May 26. The stolen vehicle was recovered from him.
Karnan, a bike taxi driver from Kanthegoundenpalayam near Alandurai, was caught at a petrol station where he had parked his motorcycle. Police identified and tracked him using CCTV footage and deployed plainclothes officers to arrest him.
The case was reported by R Saravanakumar, 32, who works as the pre-delivery inspection in-charge at the showroom. On May 31, Saravanakumar found the electric coupe missing during a routine check. CCTV footage showed an unknown man driving the car away.
Further investigation revealed Karnan had been at the showroom over a week before the theft. Seeing that the car keys were left inside, he stole the vehicle due to insufficient funds to buy one legally. He had hidden the car at his farmland.
Karnan was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody as the probe continues.
