A birthday celebration in a village in Mohali turned violent on Sunday evening after unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire at a group of youths, seriously injuring a boy and a girl.

The attackers reportedly fled the spot on two motorcycles after the shooting.

Girl suffers serious abdominal injury

The injured have been identified as Salman and Suman. They were initially rushed to Civil Hospital, Phase VI, for treatment.

Suman suffered a bullet injury to her abdomen and was reported to be in serious condition. Salman sustained a gunshot wound to his arm.

Both were later shifted to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh for further treatment.

Police scan CCTV footage

Police reached the spot soon after the incident and launched an investigation.

Investigating Officer Bhagat Ram of the Phase I police station said CCTV footage from nearby areas was being examined to identify the assailants and trace their movements after the shooting.

Police suspect that the incident could be linked to a financial dispute, although the exact motive remains under investigation.

A case has been registered under the Arms Act, and further investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the firing.
