On Wednesday, Greater Chennai police arrested a 37-year-old biryani seller, Gnanasekaran, for allegedly sexually assaulting a female student from Anna University. The victim reported that the assault occurred on December 23, 2024, around 8 pm, behind a campus building while she was talking to a male friend. She claimed the attacker intimidated her friend before committing the crime. Following her complaint, the Kotturpuram All Women’s Police Station filed a case, and four special teams were formed for the investigation.

The police, using scientific evidence, identified and apprehended Gnanasekaran, a local biryani vendor. He confessed to the crime, and authorities are exploring whether he has been involved in other offenses. Cooperation from the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) is aiding the ongoing investigation. The university has already installed additional CCTV cameras and strengthened security measures.

In response to the incident, protests erupted on campus, with the Students Federation of India (SFI) and All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) demanding justice. The political fallout was swift, with opposition leaders criticizing the government’s handling of safety in educational institutions. Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan assured that swift action was being taken to ensure justice for the victim.

The Tamil Nadu BJP and other political parties have also condemned the assault and called for stricter measures to protect women in public spaces.
