The BJP has credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for India’s 7.8 per cent GDP growth in the April-June quarter, while demanding an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his earlier criticism of the economy.
The latest growth figure has triggered a fresh political exchange, with the BJP using the economic performance to counter the Congress leader’s warnings about an impending economic crisis.
BJP points to growth despite global challenges
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, senior party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad praised Modi’s leadership and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s financial management.
He also acknowledged the contribution of Indian industries, businessmen and workers to the country’s economic performance.
Prasad said the growth had been achieved despite wars, the Gulf crisis and wider global uncertainty. He argued that stable leadership had helped the country turn economic challenges into opportunities.
The BJP leader also contrasted the current growth rate with India’s economic position in 2013, saying the country had moved from the “fragile five” to a 7.8 per cent growth rate.
Prasad attacks Rahul Gandhi’s economic criticism
Prasad strongly criticised Gandhi for previously describing the Indian economy as “dead” and warning that a major economic “tsunami” was approaching.
He alleged that Gandhi’s remarks were baseless and could affect public confidence in the country’s economic prospects. The BJP leader demanded that the Congress leader apologise for his statements.
Prasad also questioned Gandhi’s understanding of economic management and development, accusing him of making statements without adequate preparation.
Modi calls growth a “herculean feat”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the 7.8 per cent GDP growth as a “herculean feat”.
In a video message, Modi said the performance was particularly significant amid global turmoil, geopolitical conflicts and supply chain disruptions. He criticised what he described as pessimism surrounding India’s economic outlook.
The Prime Minister called for efforts to maintain the growth momentum and strengthen India’s self-reliance as the country continues to navigate global economic challenges.
