Chennai: The videos and photos of contaminated black coloured water coming out of taps and foaming as it filled the buckets in the Villivakkam area here, are being circulated on social media. The residents of Villivakkam complain that the water supplied to them by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is black and contaminated.

As Tamil Nadu faces water crisis, the residents of Chennai, its capital, have been struggling with lack of water even for their basic necessities.

Reportedly, the mixing of sewage water into the corporation water is the reason for the contaminated water coming out of the taps.

According to sources, people of Villivakkam complain that they are forced to buy water from private water tankers. As water supply by tankers is provided in their locality, getting them there costs them four times the normal charges.

However, the ruling party (AIADMK) claims that there is no scarcity of water, but a slight shortage. The opposition (DMK) leaders and local residents took to the streets of Chennai, led by the party president M K Stalin on Monday, June 24, carrying empty buckets to protest against the government for its inability to deal with the water crisis.

Reportedly, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy has said that 10 million litres of water will be transported from Jolarpet in Vellore district by train to Chennai.
