Mumbai: A speeding BMW car overturned inside a tunnel on Mumbai’s Coastal Road late on Tuesday night, briefly disrupting vehicular movement on the southbound stretch near Tardeo, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to police sources, the accident occurred when the driver allegedly lost control of the luxury vehicle while navigating the curved section of the tunnel. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the mishap.
Traffic slows down after accident
The overturned car led to a temporary slowdown in traffic along the busy southbound arm of the Coastal Road. The Mumbai Traffic Police quickly responded to the scene, ensuring that no secondary collisions took place.
The department also alerted commuters through an advisory on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Traffic movement is slow at Coastal Road (Tardeo) southbound due to BMW car accident.”
Traffic was diverted briefly while recovery operations were carried out. The damaged vehicle was later removed using a crane, allowing normal traffic to resume within an hour.
Video of the crash goes viral
Shortly after the incident, videos showing the overturned BMW inside the tunnel went viral on social media, with several users highlighting the dangers of speeding within enclosed tunnel spaces. Many also lauded the prompt response of the Mumbai Traffic Police.
Police begin investigation
Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident. Initial reports suggest that the vehicle was travelling at high speed before it overturned.
“The car has been seized and technical inspection is underway to ascertain whether mechanical failure or speeding led to the accident,” said a senior traffic police official.
No case has been registered yet, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Coastal Road sees growing traffic
The newly opened Mumbai Coastal Road, connecting Marine Drive to Worli, has become one of the city’s busiest and most scenic routes. However, traffic police have repeatedly urged motorists to adhere to speed limits, especially while driving through tunnels and curves.
Officials reiterated that strict monitoring through CCTV surveillance and speed cameras is being enforced to ensure safety on the corridor.
