In a valiant display of courage, Phantom, an Indian Army assault dog, sacrificed his life during an anti-terror operation in the Sunderbani Sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Akhnoor area. Part of the army’s elite K9 unit, Phantom played a crucial role in drawing enemy fire during the mission, sustaining injuries that led to his tragic death.
Phantom’s heroic efforts in Sunderbani Sector
The operation took place on October 28, when terrorists targeted an army vehicle in the Asan area. Following this attack, the army launched an extensive search operation. Phantom, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois, was instrumental in the mission, helping locate a terrorist who was later neutralized. The army also seized arms and ammunition, marking a significant success in counter-terrorism efforts in the region.

A legacy of bravery
Phantom was born on May 25, 2020, and joined the Remount Veterinary Corps in Meerut. He was posted with the 16 Corps, also known as the White Knight Corps, in August 2022. His dedication and courage were honoured by the Indian Army, which paid tribute, stating, “We salute the supreme sacrifice of our true hero, a valiant Indian Army dog, Phantom.” The White Knight Corps, known for its rigorous anti-terrorism missions, lauded Phantom for his bravery and loyalty.
Remembering Phantom and Kent
Phantom’s sacrifice follows a similar story of bravery from last year, when six-year-old Kent, a female Labrador-type dog from the 21st Army Dog Unit, gave her life in Rajouri district while shielding her handler from enemy fire. Kent, who had participated in nine successful operations, was given full honours, wrapped in the tricolour, with army personnel paying their respects.
Army K9 unit’s crucial role in counter-terrorism
The Indian Army’s K9 unit is known for its specialized canines trained for counter-insurgency and anti-terror missions. Dogs like Phantom and Kent are invaluable in high-stakes operations, demonstrating not only their courage but also their irreplaceable role in ensuring the safety of the forces they support.
Phantom’s sacrifice has once again brought into focus the dedication of these loyal companions, who serve with unmatched loyalty and bravery, often making the ultimate sacrifice in their line of duty.
