In a surprising turn of events, a wedding in Melady, Marayoor (Idukki district) was abruptly cancelled after the bride contacted the police moments before the ceremony. The bride, a native of Tirupur in Tamil Nadu, was set to marry a groom from Melady. Her family had arrived a day prior and stayed near the temple, which was to host the wedding.
Just before the scheduled muhurtham (auspicious time), the bride dialed 1012 — the police control room number — stating she no longer wished to proceed with the marriage and sought assistance. Responding promptly, police arrived at the temple venue and brought the bride, groom, and both families to the local station for discussion.
Following a round of talks facilitated by the officers, the wedding was mutually called off. Despite all preparations — including a grand feast — having been completed, the bride’s firm stance was respected, and the families parted ways without conflict.
The incident drew attention for its calm resolution and the proactive role of police in upholding individual consent in marital decisions.
