In a heartbreaking incident, Rahul Chaitanya Madala, a hearing- and speech-impaired BTech student at IIIT-Allahabad, died by suicide on his birthday. The 19-year-old from Nizamabad, Telangana, jumped from the fifth floor of his hostel at around 2 AM on March 30.
Rahul, who secured 2nd rank in JEE to enter IIIT-A, had messaged his mother before taking the extreme step, expressing distress over academic pressure and urging her to care for their family. Reports suggest he had failed six first-semester papers and had not attended classes for months, which may have contributed to his struggles.
Fellow students, angered by the tragedy, held the institution responsible, alleging negligence. His mother, devastated by the loss, questioned why the administration never informed them of his prolonged absence from classes. She recalled their last conversation when he had asked for ₹500 just days before the tragedy.
Following the incident, the institute formed a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances leading to his death. Officials stated that further inquiries will determine the exact cause. Meanwhile, discussions on student mental health and academic pressure have reignited after this shocking loss.
