A tragic incident unfolded in north Kolkata’s Maniktala on Wednesday night, where a 19-year-old engineering student was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan in his home. The deceased, Soham Sen, lived on the fifth floor of Merlin Ekta Apartment on Abhedananda Road.
According to police, the heartbreaking event occurred shortly after a heated disagreement with his mother. She had refused to fulfill his request for a new motorbike, citing safety concerns. Around 8 pm, Sen’s grandmother found him hanging using a bed sheet. He was immediately rushed to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital but was declared brought dead by doctors.
Soham Sen was a former student of Calcutta Boys’ School and was currently pursuing his BTech degree at Techno India Engineering College. Police revealed that Sen’s parents were separated, and his mother was raising him single-handedly.
A senior Kolkata Police officer mentioned that Soham had a strong passion for biking and had been persistent in his demand for a new motorcycle. However, his mother, worried about potential road mishaps, firmly declined. This disagreement reportedly led to his extreme step.
No suicide note was recovered from the scene. Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death and begun an investigation into the circumstances.
This incident has sparked conversations about the need for emotional support, mental health awareness, and open communication within families, especially among youth.
