The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced changes to the examination format for Class 11 and 12, effective from the academic year 2024-25. The revised format emphasizes concept application questions over long-form answers, marking a significant shift in assessment methodology.

However, there are no alterations to the exam format for Classes 9 and 10.

This initiative aims to transform the student learning experience by fostering a shift away from rote memorization towards a more comprehensive understanding of concepts. It is envisioned to encourage creativity, innovation, and a deeper appreciation for the subjects studied.

CBSE Director (Academics) Joseph Emanuel stated that the board’s decision aligns with the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Multiple measures have been undertaken to implement Competency-Based Education, including aligning assessments with competencies and providing resources for teachers and students.

The percentage of competency-focused questions, such as multiple-choice questions (MCQs), case-based questions, and source-based integrated questions, has been increased from 40% to 50%. Conversely, the percentage of constructed response questions, including short and long answers, has been reduced from 40% to 30%.

Emanuel emphasized that the primary goal is to cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills among students to address the challenges of the 21st century. The board remains committed to aligning assessments with NEP-2020 for the academic session 2024-2025, aiming to assess the application of concepts in real-life situations more effectively.
