Kollam, Kerala: A three-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after a ceiling fan detached and fell on him at an anganwadi centre operating from a rented building in Thirumullavaram on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 10:30 am, when only one staff member was present, as the teacher was on leave. The old, dysfunctional fan, reportedly left unrepaired for a long time, suddenly gave way. Of the three children present, one sustained minor injuries while another had a close call as the fan’s blade brushed past without harm.

The injured child was quickly rushed to the district hospital, where a scan and other diagnostic tests ruled out serious injuries. He was discharged the same day.

U. Pavithra, ward councillor and chairperson of the Health Standing Committee, said an explanation has been sought from officials who had certified the building’s structural safety. Operations at the centre have been suspended, and starting Friday, children will be shifted to the Thottumugham anganwadi, which functions from a corporation-owned facility.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of anganwadis housed in rented premises across the state.
