Chaos at Marina fish market: Stalls merged, encroachments rise, vendors cry foul
A year after its ₹10-crore inauguration, the Marina Loop Road fish market in Chennai is mired in controversy. Several walls separating the 2m x 1.5m stalls have allegedly been illegally demolished to create larger spaces, triggering outrage among local fishermen.
Fisherfolk accuse some vendors—many of whom they claim are not from the fishing community—of colluding with Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials to grab bigger spaces and sublet them for ₹2,000–₹4,000. “At least 10 stalls were given to non-fishermen,” said Palani, a 40-year-old local fisherman, alleging that struggling vendors in the market’s rear rows pressured officials to break walls for better visibility and sales.
Some vendors argue the small stall size limits their ability to display larger fish like sharks. However, DMK MLA D Velu said the demolition attempts happened without his consent and that he has halted the activity. “Most fishermen are against this. Leasing stalls is illegal,” he asserted.
The market, intended to streamline fish sales and reduce congestion, is failing in both goals. Vendors have spread their wares into walkways, corridors, and even the parking lot, compromising hygiene and access. Waste and stagnant wastewater are creating foul smells, while over half the stalls remain unused.
Customer R Avinash said Sunday visits are chaotic, with Loop Road becoming a one-way stretch, vehicles clogging the road, and shoppers jostling for space. MLA Velu has assured a resolution within a week.
