With mobile numbers increasingly used for banking, digital payments and online services, keeping track of connections registered in your name has become an important digital safety step. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) provides the Sanchar Saathi portal to help consumers check mobile connections issued in their name and report those they do not recognise.
An unfamiliar number could signal a problem
Mobile connections can be issued using identity documents, including Aadhaar. If a connection is obtained using another person’s identity details, the individual may remain unaware unless they check the numbers registered in their name.
An unauthorised connection could potentially be used for calls, messages, online accounts or fraudulent activities. The DoT’s TAFCOP facility allows consumers to identify such connections and report numbers that they did not obtain.
How to check numbers registered in your name
Consumers can use the Sanchar Saathi portal and select the facility for checking mobile connections. They need to enter their 10-digit mobile number, complete the CAPTCHA and verify their identity through an OTP.
Once verified, the portal displays the mobile connections registered under their identity. Users can review the list and report numbers they do not recognise or did not obtain.
