Dr. Balaji, a doctor at Chennai’s Kalaignar Centenary Super Specialty Hospital, was stabbed by Vignesh, the son of a former patient, on Wednesday. Dr. Balaji sustained seven stab wounds and is currently under treatment. Vignesh, whose mother was previously treated at the hospital, reportedly suspected mishandling of her care. He was apprehended while trying to escape after the attack.
The incident has ignited political tension in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed shock, ordered a full investigation, and assured necessary medical care for Dr. Balaji. Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin suggested Vignesh had been misguided by private hospital staff where his mother is now being treated. In response, the opposition, led by BJP state chief K Annamalai and actor-politician Vijay, criticized the DMK government for failing to protect medical staff.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) condemned the attack, calling for stringent measures to safeguard medical professionals. They stressed that superficial measures won’t suffice and demanded strong legislative actions.
