KARUR: Two young boys sustained serious hand injuries after unburnt firecrackers—discarded following a temple festival—exploded while they played with them in Goundanpatti village near Kulithalai on Tuesday.
The incident traces back to a festival held nearly 25 days ago in the area, where fireworks were a part of the celebrations. Post-event, some unignited crackers were carelessly dumped in a village garbage mound. On Tuesday, four children—M Akshid (8), M Sanjith (7), T Manimaran (8), and T Mahalakshmi (5)—found the unspent crackers and tried to ignite them using stones.
The crackers suddenly exploded. Akshid and Sanjith suffered injuries to both hands and were immediately rushed to Tiruchy Government Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Manimaran and Mahalakshmi had minor injuries and were treated with first aid and discharged.
Following the explosion, Kulithalai Tahsildar Indumathi and DSP Senthil Kumar visited the site and initiated an inquiry. The Nangavaram police have registered a case and launched a search for those responsible for dumping the explosive waste in a public area.
Authorities have urged festival organisers and firework handlers to strictly follow disposal safety norms to prevent such tragedies.
