New Delhi: The Chinese Embassy in India on Monday launched the China Online Visa Application System, a move aimed at simplifying and modernising the visa application process for Indian travellers. From December 22, applicants can now fill out visa forms and upload supporting documents online, significantly reducing the time spent on paperwork and preliminary procedures.

Shift towards a digital visa process

The introduction of the online platform marks a major shift in how Chinese visas are processed in India. According to an announcement shared by the Chinese Ambassador to India on social media, the new system allows applicants to complete most of the application formalities digitally before visiting the Visa Application Centre.

Applicants can access the system through the official website of the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre. The platform enables users to create an account, complete the visa application form, and upload all required documents online. Officials said the initiative is intended to make the process more efficient, transparent, and user-friendly.

How the new system works

Under the new arrangement, applicants are required to carefully follow step-by-step instructions provided on the official portal. After submitting the application and documents online, the system will conduct an initial review.

Applicants must ensure that their application status reflects “online review completed” and that they have received a confirmation email before visiting the Visa Application Centre to submit their passport and other physical documents. Officials have emphasised that incomplete or improperly submitted online applications could result in delays.

This hybrid model, combining online submission with in-person verification, is expected to streamline operations while maintaining necessary security and verification checks.

Role of the Visa Application Centre

Despite the shift to online applications, the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in New Delhi will continue to play a crucial role. The centre will assist applicants with biometric submission, passport collection, and final processing.

The centre operates from Monday to Friday between 9.00 am and 3.00 pm and is located at the Concourse Floor of Shivaji Stadium Metro Station on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Connaught Place. Applicants can also seek assistance through the helpline provided by the centre.

Officials clarified that the online system is designed to complement, not replace, the services offered at the Visa Application Centre.

Saving time and improving efficiency

With the launch of the online platform, applicants are expected to save considerable time, especially during the initial stages of visa processing. Earlier, applicants were required to fill out lengthy forms manually and submit physical copies of documents, often leading to long queues and repeat visits.

By digitising the application process, authorities hope to reduce congestion at visa centres and improve overall processing efficiency. The move is also in line with broader global trends toward digital governance and e-services.

Broader context of India–China travel ties

The launch of the online visa application system comes at a time when travel links between India and China are gradually normalising after years of disruption. Earlier this year, India confirmed that the visa regime for Chinese nationals for tourism and business purposes is now fully functional.

The resumption of visa services followed a suspension imposed after the 2020 border tensions. Tourist visas for Chinese nationals were officially resumed worldwide in November 2025, expanding on a limited reopening that began in July 2025. Business visas had already been reinstated earlier.

Confidence-building measures between the two countries

The restoration of visa services is part of a series of people-centric confidence-building measures agreed upon by India and China in 2025. These measures also included the resumption of direct commercial flights in October 2025 and the revival of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra pilgrimage.

Officials on both sides have indicated that easing travel restrictions is essential for rebuilding trust, enhancing cultural exchanges, and supporting economic cooperation between the two countries.

Expected impact on tourism and trade

Travel industry stakeholders believe that the introduction of the online visa system, combined with the resumption of broader visa services, will provide a boost to tourism, business travel, and academic exchanges. China remains an important destination for Indian business professionals, students, and tourists, while India continues to attract Chinese travellers.

With both countries together accounting for over 250 crore people, improved mobility is expected to have a positive impact on bilateral trade, investment, and people-to-people ties.

Conclusion

The launch of the China Online Visa Application System represents a significant step toward simplifying cross-border travel procedures and strengthening engagement between India and China. By reducing paperwork and processing time, the new system is expected to make travel more accessible and efficient, supporting renewed exchanges after years of limited mobility.
