The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Tuesday claimed a major breakthrough after the Bihar and Assam governments issued formal notifications assuring the withdrawal of FIRs against NEET-UG protesters, the release of detained persons, and a commitment that no further punitive action would be taken.
The development came hours after the CJP warned that it would resume its nationwide agitation, alleging that the Centre had failed to honour assurances made during talks that led to the suspension of protests last week.
CJP claims breakthrough after late-night meeting
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said government representatives met party leaders at around 1 am, with discussions lasting nearly three hours. In a video posted on X, Das said officials shared copies of notifications issued by Bihar and Assam and reiterated that similar guarantees from the Union government and other BJP/NDA-ruled states would be released by Tuesday.
According to Das, the governments assured protesters that all registered cases would be withdrawn, detainees released, and no further legal action would be initiated against those who participated in the demonstrations.
Bihar and Assam issue formal assurances
The Assam government stated that five cases related to the NEET protests had been registered until 6 pm on July 26, leading to the arrest of 13 people. It said the process of withdrawing the cases and reviewing arrests for release would begin immediately, while confirming that no further proceedings would be pursued.
The Bihar government also assured that no punitive or legal action would be taken against those who participated in the protests before the same deadline. It pledged to withdraw FIRs and notices, release detained individuals, and refrain from future action in those cases.
Protesters seek nationwide guarantees
Earlier on Monday, CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das criticised continued police action against protesters in some BJP-ruled states, describing it as a violation of commitments made during negotiations with the Centre.
The party said its legal team had been working with lawyers across affected states to secure the release of detained protesters while awaiting similar notifications from the Union government and other NDA-ruled states.
