In a heartbreaking incident from Thevalakkara, Kerala, a 13-year-old student lost his life after being electrocuted while retrieving his slipper from the roof of a government-run boys’ school on Thursday.

Just before the morning classes commenced, a group of students were playing when a slipper got lodged on the school’s rooftop. Mithun, a Class 8 student, attempted to retrieve it. While climbing the shed, he slipped and accidentally touched a live electric wire that passed above the structure. Despite prompt efforts to save him, Mithun tragically succumbed to his injuries.

State Education Minister V. Sivankutty expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a “tragic loss of a young life”. He confirmed that an inquiry had been initiated and warned that those found negligent would face strict action. “All schools are mandated to present a safety fitness certificate before the academic year begins. We will verify if this institution followed the protocol,” he added.

Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty also ordered a detailed report from the Chief Electrical Inspector, promising accountability for lapses.

Local MLA Kovoor Kunjumon echoed similar sentiments, pledging justice for the grieving family.

However, Shaji Thomas, the local Executive Engineer, defended the Electricity Board, stating the line had existed safely for over 40 years and that school authorities were informed two days ago about the need to address the issue. Teachers remain in shock over the avoidable loss.
