A junior clerk posted at the CGST office has been suspended after allegedly attempting to sell official documents to a scrap dealer in order to fund his alcohol addiction.
According to sources, the employee had joined the department on a compassionate appointment basis and was recently transferred from Madhya Pradesh to Nagpur city division. He is reported to be habitually dependent on liquor and frequently borrowed money from colleagues to sustain his drinking habit.
The incident occurred during the relocation of files from the divisional office at the New Secretariat building to the CGST’s main office at Seminary Hills. While supervising the loading of documents, the clerk diverted some file bundles into a different vehicle, which was then collected by a local scrap collector (raddi-wallah).
Luckily, another employee who witnessed the suspicious activity immediately reported the incident to senior officials. The department acted swiftly, and the missing files were recovered and returned to the CGST office’s storage facility.
Officials clarified that although the documents were not classified, they are still part of official records and must be properly archived. A departmental inquiry has been launched to investigate the matter.
This incident has raised serious concerns about internal vigilance and substance abuse among staff in sensitive government departments. The probe is expected to determine further disciplinary action.
