Pudukkottai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay inaugurated 44 completed development projects worth approximately Rs 68.31 crore and laid foundation stones for 70 new works valued at Rs 11.72 crore during his visit to Pudukkottai on Monday. He also distributed welfare assistance worth Rs 62.73 crore to 13,676 beneficiaries, combining infrastructure development with the delivery of government benefits.
The visit was Vijay’s first official tour of Pudukkottai district since he assumed office in May. It included the inauguration of a new bus terminal and a multipurpose indoor sports stadium, interactions with farmers and a roadshow that drew large crowds along the route.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the completed projects and newly launched works together represent an investment of more than Rs 80 crore. The programmes covered public transport infrastructure, sports facilities and other local development requirements.
New bus terminal inaugurated at a cost of Rs 23.25 crore
One of the major facilities inaugurated by Vijay was a new bus terminal constructed at a cost of Rs 23.25 crore. The terminal has been developed with 60 bus bays to accommodate buses and improve passenger facilities.
The infrastructure includes commercial complexes and waiting rooms, along with designated facilities for nursing mothers and people with disabilities. These provisions are intended to make the terminal more accessible and convenient for passengers.
Bus terminals play an important role in connecting residents of district headquarters with surrounding towns and villages. Better passenger facilities can support daily commuters, students, workers and people travelling for healthcare and other essential services.
The new terminal is among the largest individual projects inaugurated during the Chief Minister’s visit, accounting for a substantial share of the Rs 68.31 crore allocated to the 44 completed works.
Indoor sports stadium to support local athletes
Vijay also inaugurated a multipurpose indoor sports stadium built at a cost of Rs 6.29 crore.
The facility is intended to provide local athletes with infrastructure and training opportunities in badminton, volleyball, kabaddi and table tennis. The availability of an indoor venue can allow sporting activities to continue without depending entirely on outdoor conditions.
The stadium is expected to serve athletes from Pudukkottai and surrounding areas who require access to dedicated facilities for practice and competitions.
Investment in district-level sports infrastructure is also relevant to identifying and developing talent beyond major cities. Facilities that support different disciplines can give young players more opportunities to train and pursue competitive sport.
The stadium was among the completed projects formally opened during the visit, alongside the new bus terminal and other public infrastructure works.
Welfare assistance worth Rs 62.73 crore distributed
Apart from inaugurating development projects, the Chief Minister distributed welfare assistance worth Rs 62.73 crore to 13,676 beneficiaries.
The distribution formed a major part of the district programme, with assistance reaching thousands of people. The reported value covers the welfare support provided during the visit, while the 44 completed projects and 70 newly launched works represent separate infrastructure and development allocations.
Such district-level programmes bring government assistance directly to beneficiaries and provide an opportunity to review the implementation of welfare initiatives.
The visit therefore covered three broad areas: completed infrastructure, the launch of additional development works and the distribution of financial or other welfare support.
Vijay discusses irrigation concerns with farmers
Before the public programme, Vijay inspected local agricultural produce and interacted briefly with farmers to understand their requirements.
One of the key concerns raised during the discussions was the availability of Cauvery river water for irrigation. Several areas were reportedly facing water shortages, prompting farmers to highlight the need for adequate water supplies to support cultivation.
Irrigation remains an important issue for agricultural communities, particularly when water availability affects crop planning and farming operations. The request for Cauvery water reflects the dependence of farmers in parts of the region on reliable irrigation arrangements.
The discussions also brought attention to the cashew industry in Adanakottai. Vijay was informed that the industry provides a major source of livelihood for approximately five lakh families in the region.
The cashew sector supports economic activity through cultivation, processing and related work. Its importance to local households makes it a significant part of the region’s livelihood landscape.
The interaction gave the Chief Minister an opportunity to hear concerns beyond the infrastructure projects included in the official programme. Irrigation requirements and the economic importance of cashew-related activities were among the issues highlighted during the visit.
Roadshow draws crowds along the route
Vijay arrived in Tiruchirappalli on a special flight from Chennai before travelling approximately 55 km by road to Pudukkottai.
A roadshow was held during the journey, with people gathering along both sides of the roads to greet the Chief Minister. Crowds assembled in areas including Viralimalai and Mathur, where supporters raised slogans and cheered as his convoy passed.
According to police, hundreds of people had begun gathering as early as 8 am. The turnout reflected the public interest surrounding Vijay’s first official visit to the district since becoming Chief Minister.
The roadshow also required police personnel to manage the crowds and maintain security along the route.
A young girl who had arrived early to see the Chief Minister fainted during the gathering, police said. Personnel on duty immediately assisted her, carried her to safety and helped revive her.
The incident highlighted the need for crowd management and basic medical assistance during large public gatherings, particularly when people wait for extended periods in crowded conditions.
Visit combines infrastructure, welfare and local concerns
Vijay’s Pudukkottai programme brought together the inauguration of completed projects, the launch of new development works and the distribution of welfare assistance.
The 44 completed projects account for approximately Rs 68.31 crore, while the 70 newly launched works have an estimated value of Rs 11.72 crore. The separate welfare assistance of Rs 62.73 crore was distributed among 13,676 beneficiaries.
The bus terminal and indoor sports stadium were two prominent facilities opened during the visit. At the same time, the interaction with farmers brought irrigation shortages and the regional cashew industry into focus.
The Chief Minister’s first official district visit since taking office thus covered both public infrastructure and livelihood-related concerns. The newly launched projects will now need to move through their respective implementation stages, while the issues raised by farmers remain important considerations for the district.
