A passenger aboard the Vande Bharat Express from Rani Kamlapati to Jabalpur Junction on February 1st was taken aback when he discovered a dead cockroach in the meal provided by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Dr. Shubhendu Keshari shared several images of the contaminated meal on social media platform X, sparking widespread concern about the quality of food served on Indian trains.
Dr. Keshari’s post showcased the non-vegetarian thali he received during his journey, highlighting the presence of the dead cockroach. Expressing his dismay, he also shared a picture of the complaint he filed at Jabalpur station regarding the unsanitary food conditions.

IRCTC swiftly responded to the incident, offering a sincere apology for the distressing experience. They announced that a substantial penalty had been imposed on the responsible service provider and assured that monitoring measures had been reinforced at the source.
Railway Seva also acknowledged the complaint, assuring Dr. Keshari that it had been registered on RailMadad, with a complaint number sent to his mobile device via SMS.
The incident drew reactions from other X users, with one vowing never to order food from railways again after witnessing the quality concerns.
This unfortunate occurrence is not an isolated case on the Vande Bharat Express. In a similar incident last July, a passenger traveling from Bhopal to Gwalior encountered a cockroach in their meal. Railway Seva promptly responded to the complaint, issuing an apology and pledging corrective actions to prevent future recurrences. IRCTC also stepped in, ensuring the affected passenger received fresh food.
