A quirky food experiment combining two beloved favourites—pani puri and coffee—has taken social media by storm, leaving Indian street food lovers both amused and horrified.

Barista swaps pani for coffee

Indian barista Vishal Bharti shared a short reel on Instagram showcasing what he called a playful experiment: coffee pani puri. In the video, he replaces traditional fillings such as aloo, chana and ragda with a shot of black coffee, topping it with frothed milk and even finishing it with latte art.

The clip shows Bharti carefully assembling the pani puri like a café beverage before finally taking a bite himself. While he does not verbally review the taste, his expression—especially a telling side-eye at the end—added to the humour of the moment.

Internet divided over ‘Puri-ccino’

As expected, the unconventional combination triggered strong reactions online. Many users expressed mock outrage, calling it an attack on a sacred street food. One commenter jokingly dubbed it “Puri-ccino,” a phrase that quickly caught on in the comments section.

Others reacted with dramatic humour, writing lines such as “Wars have started for lesser things” and “No please, no!” Some viewers, however, admitted curiosity, with a few adventurous foodies saying they would be willing to try it at least once.

A reel meant for fun

While the video sparked debate, it was clear to many that the creation was meant purely as a fun reel rather than a serious menu addition. Still, the sight of pani puri being filled with coffee instead of spicy or tangy water struck an emotional chord with street food enthusiasts.

The viral moment once again highlighted how social media food experiments—especially those involving iconic Indian dishes—can quickly become talking points, blending humour, nostalgia and mild outrage in equal measure.
