A worrying incident occurred during a caesarean section at a state-run hospital in Kolkata, where a rusted pair of scissors broke, raising alarms about the quality of surgical instruments used in medical procedures. The incident unfolded when a small portion of the scissors suddenly detached and fell while doctors were performing the operation. A trainee doctor from SSKM Hospital noted that the situation could have led to serious injuries if the broken piece had fallen inside the patient’s abdomen during bladder dissection.
Junior doctors have alleged that this is not an isolated incident, citing previous occurrences of similar issues at state-run medical colleges and hospitals. One trainee doctor mentioned, “We informed the sister in-charge. She said that she has a box full of such instruments. These are all fresh scissors. Probably these are all old rusted instruments which have been supplied after being freshly painted.”
Dr. Kajal Krishna Banik, a senior physician in Kolkata, expressed serious concerns, stating, “This is very unfortunate. This proves that there is a lack of monitoring. A broken rusted portion of scissors is very dangerous. If it stays inside the body, it may lead to several complications.”
While officials from the state health department and SSKM Hospital refrained from commenting on the matter, sources indicate that hospital authorities have initiated a probe into the incident to address these alarming safety standards.
