New Delhi: A day after Kerala chief minister Oomen Chandy set off a political storm confirming that BJP ally Vellapally Natesan is the man who asked him to skip a statue unveiling event that Prime Minister Modi will be attending on December 15, Congress Vice-President launched a scathing attack on the PM saying that he has insulted the people of Kerala by stopping the Chief Minister from attending a function.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Kerala for the first time after assuming power. The event has been organised by the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, which represents the backward Ezhava community and sent up a new political party last week. The group is expected to partner with the BJP for the state polls next year.

The Congress alleges that Chandy was asked to keep away from a function in Kollam where the statue of former Congress leader R Sanker is to be inaugurated by PM Modi. The Chief Minister’s name was included in the event but he was reportedly uninvited.

Sources say a furious Chief Minister will convey his decision to skip the function to the prime minister when he receives him at the airport in Kochi this afternoon. PM Modi will be in Kerala for two days.

Even as Chandy claimed that as per protocol he should be the part of the programme, denying any role in the event, the BJP said it is a private function where official protocol does not apply and the chief minister’s presence is not needed.
