Two kitchen staff at the Regional Mental Hospital (RMH), Yerawada, were found intoxicated while preparing food for over 1,000 patients on the night of February 13. Authorities have initiated their suspension.
Hospital Superintendent Dr. Srinivas Kolod stated that security guards alerted him at 10:30 PM. Upon inspection, he found Kailash Borage (57) and Sandip Jambhulkar (40) visibly drunk, unable to walk properly or speak coherently, and even yelling at colleagues. Their blood samples have been sent for forensic analysis.
Expressing serious concerns, Dr. Kolod emphasized the risk posed by the cooks handling gas cylinders under the influence. The hospital, which houses 972 patients, including many with chronic conditions, cannot afford such negligence.
This is not an isolated case. On January 26, an inebriated attendant, Ganesh Jadhav (54), attacked a colleague and provoked patients with a history of substance abuse. He was suspended for three months, and an FIR was filed against him.
Despite a January 24 circular warning staff against consuming alcohol on duty, violations persist. Under the Maharashtra Civil Services Rules (1979), consuming alcohol while on duty is strictly prohibited. Hospital authorities continue awareness sessions to prevent such incidents.
