A viral video of Head Constable Ashok Kumar Saini sitting beside the body of his 26-year-old son Akash and alleging rampant drug sale in his neighbourhood has sparked sharp debate in Punjab.

In the emotional video recorded in Guru Nanakpura — located barely 7 km from the Golden Temple — Saini claimed that narcotics were being sold openly in the area. He said procuring drugs was “like ordering from Zomato,” underscoring the ease of access.

Police release ‘retraction’ video

Twenty-four hours after the clip went viral, Amritsar Police released another video in which Saini appeared to retract his earlier claims. The move has led to widespread speculation and public scrutiny, especially as the grieving father had spoken out while sitting on the road with his son’s body.

Akash had reportedly been released from a rehabilitation centre just a day before his death. According to sources, he had undergone multiple rehab stints in the past.

Neighbourhood under spotlight

Residents of Guru Nanakpura say drug abuse has long been a concern in parts of the locality. While police have not publicly confirmed the cause of death, the incident has reignited discussions on narcotics availability and enforcement in the city.

The contrasting videos — one alleging “open sale” and the other retracting the statement — have intensified calls for a transparent inquiry. Many on social media have demanded clarity on whether pressure was exerted on the bereaved father.

Authorities have stated that investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, the episode has once again drawn attention to Punjab’s continuing struggle against substance abuse, an issue that has deeply affected families across the state.
