Cops on the run: Two arrested in Malapparamba sex racket case
Kozhikode: Two police officers wanted in the Malapparamba sex racket case were arrested on Tuesday after evading authorities for several days. Senior Civil Police Officer Shaijith K and CPO Sanith K were apprehended by the city crime squad and Nadakkavu police while attempting to relocate to a new hideout. The duo had been hiding in a rented house in Korangad, near Thamarassery.
After their names surfaced in the case, both officers switched off their phones, triggering a statewide manhunt. A previous raid at a house in Padanilam, tipped as Sanith’s location, came up empty, though police issued a notice to the homeowner.
The sex racket, uncovered on June 6 at an apartment in Malapparamba, resulted in nine arrests, including clients, sex workers, and the alleged operators. The brothel, camouflaged as a spa, was reportedly sublet by a man claiming to be a physiotherapist for Bahrain’s football team. A dedicated phone line was used to manage clients.
Investigations, led by Nadakkavu Inspector N Prajeesh, revealed the two officers had financial ties with Bindu, the 47-year-old prime accused from Wayanad. Although the brothel had been under surveillance for nearly a year, Shaijith and Sanith had been watched closely for the last six months. Both officers were suspended after their roles came to light.
Bindu, along with Abhirami (35) from Idukki and Upesh (48) from Feroke, are believed to be the main handlers of the operation.
