The Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Cell (IPREC) of Tamil Nadu Police cracked down on two counterfeit manufacturing units, arresting five individuals involved in producing and distributing fake industrial goods under reputed brand names.
Raids conducted on June 1 and 2 in Madurai and Chennai led to the seizure of counterfeit bearings and paints valued at over ₹2.31 lakh.
In Madurai, based on a tip-off, police raided a location on the city’s outskirts where Ramesh Gupta and Ankit Gupta, both from West Bengal, were found manufacturing fake HCH and NBC bearings. Along with the forged bearings, police also seized packaging materials like fake labels and covers, collectively worth ₹58,143.
The next day in Chennai, IPREC officials raided a facility in Iyyapanthangal, Thandalam, acting on information about spurious paints being sold under the Asian Paints label. Three individuals — Palpandi, Arokiasamy, and Saravanan — were arrested for buying cheap paints and repackaging them in branded containers for deceptive retail sales. The value of the seized counterfeit paint stock amounted to ₹1.73 lakh.
The police have booked all five under sections of the Trademark Act and IPC, and further investigations are underway to identify supply chains and potential links to wider counterfeit networks.
