A couple from Haryana’s Panipat district allegedly died by suicide after reportedly facing prolonged harassment and domestic disputes linked to their daughter-in-law’s social media reel-making activities, police said.

The deceased, identified as Rajesh (46) and Suman (44), were residents of Nara village.

Family alleges prolonged harassment

According to police, the couple was found unconscious at their residence on May 9 and was shifted to a hospital in Rohtak, where both later died.

Following a complaint filed by Rajesh’s brother, police registered a case against four individuals, including the couple’s daughter-in-law Sneha, her sister, and her parents, under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code for abetment to suicide.

Police said all accused are currently absconding.

Disputes reportedly linked to social media reels

Preliminary investigation suggests that tensions within the family escalated after repeated disagreements over the daughter-in-law’s dressing choices and her alleged obsession with filming social media reels.

Police sources said the couple, who belonged to a traditional village background, frequently objected to her lifestyle and online content creation activities.

Family members alleged that the disagreements later turned into continuous harassment, intimidation, and mental distress for the deceased couple.

They further claimed that Rajesh and Suman had spoken about repeated conflicts and alleged mistreatment by the daughter-in-law’s family before their deaths.

Investigation underway

Police have launched a detailed investigation into the allegations and are working to trace the accused persons.

Officials said further action will be taken based on evidence gathered during the probe.
